We believe that strong dogs are built through thoughtful preparation—not shortcuts—and that success should be achievable through dedication, not politics.
Dog-First Philosophy
The health and well-being of every dog comes first. IDSA standards emphasize:
- Safe equipment and surfaces

A powerful performance should never come at the expense of a dog’s long-term health or happiness.

- Youth, amateur, and professional participants
We are committed to fostering a supportive community where knowledge is shared, achievements are celebrated, and competitors lift each other up—both in and out of the ring.
Built by Competitors, for Competitors
IDSA was created to fill gaps seen by active participants in the sport—unclear rules, limited accessibility, and lack of transparency. Our structure is designed to be straightforward, fair, and adaptable as the sport evolves.
We listen to our members. Feedback, innovation, and continuous improvement are core to how we operate.
Founders / Why We Started IDSA
Iron Dog Sports Association (IDSA) is a community-driven organization dedicated to celebrating the strength, athleticism, and heart of working and sporting dogs. Founded by competitors, handlers, and enthusiasts, IDSA exists to provide fair, safe, and accessible opportunities for dogs and handlers of all backgrounds to train, compete, and grow together.
Iron Dog Sports Association was founded by active competitors and handlers who are deeply invested in the future of canine performance sports—particularly weight pull. Like many in the community, we experienced firsthand the challenges that can come with unclear rules, inconsistent judging, limited progression opportunities, and a lack of transparency at events.
We started IDSA because we believe the sport—and the dogs—deserve better.
Our founders wanted an organization that:
- Places dog welfare above titles, numbers, or ego
- Uses clear, written rules that are applied consistently
- Supports competitors at every stage, from first pull to elite levels
- Encourages ethical training, conditioning, and long-term soundness
- Welcomes feedback and evolves with the needs of the sport
IDSA was built not to replace the community, but to strengthen it. We aim to provide a structure where hard work is rewarded fairly, achievements are meaningful, and competitors can trust the system they are participating in.
This organization exists because people who love the sport decided to build something better—for their dogs, for fellow competitors, and for the future of canine strength sports.
Looking Forward
As Iron Dog Sports Association grows, our goals include:
- Expanding regional and national-level events
- Developing youth and junior handler programs
- Supporting rescue and sport-dog education initiatives
- Building partnerships that strengthen the future of canine sports
